How to Turn Your Overripe Avocado into Creamy, Chocolate Ice Cream!

By

Source: ID: 2336695

Healthy, Easy, Creamy, and Dreamy!

~~Do your kids have a sweet tooth? Do YOU have a sweet tooth? Try this quick and easy healthy alternative to ice cream that both you AND your kids will enjoy! Just don’t tell them you’re putting avocados in the ice cream—shhhhhhh—it will be our little secret.~~

Wait! Don’t throw out that overripe avocado. With a few simple ingredients, you can turn it into delicious, creamy, chocolate ice cream! You have to try it to believe it—I know I did. I would have NEVER thought an avocado could be used to make ice cream, but I tried it myself and now I think I’m hooked. I was trying to figure out a way to put my overripe avocados and bananas to good use. I also had a craving for something sweet. So I took an inventory of what I had around the house, threw a few additional ingredients together, and was pleasantly surprised at the result! I’ll include the “on-the-fly” version that I made, as well as the healthier, original version of this recipe.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
INGREDIENT LIST: “On-the-Fly Creamy, Chocolate Avocado Ice Cream”
1 Serving:
- 1 overripe avocado
- 1 ripe or overripe banana
- About ½ cup of milk
- 2 tablespoons of Sweet Italian Coffee Creamer
- 1 packet of instant hot chocolate powder
- Add a few tablespoons of sugar (more or less to taste)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

ALTERNATIVE INGREDIENT LIST: “Raw Creamy, Chocolate Avocado Ice Cream”

1 Serving:

- 2 small bananas

- 1 avocado

- Raw cacao powder to taste (about 4 heap Tb)

- About 1 Tb agave nectar

- 1/2 tsp vanilla (extract or raw powder, to taste)

1/2 c. fresh almond milk (optional)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
DIRECTIONS:
Combine ingredients and blend together in food processor or blender until smooth. Put in freezer and wait about an hour or so until frozen. Enjoy!
I tried to get my husband to taste it before I told him there were avocados in it and he was very hesitant to try it--I was way too excited about it and he knew I was creating strange recipes again. He finally tasted it, after I told him what was in it (but he almost didn't--I pleaded with him to just give it a try) and guess what--he liked it too. It's funny the things I get excited about--but this was one of them!
shea duane 4 months ago
This actually sounds delicious! I'm going to try this soon!
leahlefler 4 months ago
Now that is an interesting recipe - and the ingredients are very healthy! I wonder if it would still taste good without the cocoa powder? My little one has reflux and can't have chocolate...it would be interesting to try it!
Seek-n-Find 4 months ago
@ shea duane: Let me know what you think!
@ leahlefler: I bet it would still taste good without the cocoa powder--maybe try adding something else to flavor like an extract? Let me know if you try it adding different ingredients for flavor and how it tastes! :-)
leahlefler 4 months ago
I'll let you know! We have some white chocolate powder, so I might try that (white chocolate isn't made with cocoa, so it is OK for reflux kids). I love the healthy nature of this ice cream!
Wow, I am amazed. It just so happens I have 3 very ripe avocados in my fridge. I must try this.
Lady_E 4 months ago
Excellent idea. It makes a healthier icecream. :)
I use my over-ripe avacdos in soup (I grow them). This sounds better!
Oops, I got kicked off the forums. I am definitely on the "anti-christ's" list. The Lord's got my back!
Seek-n-Find 3 months ago
Hey everybody--thanks for your comments! I haven't been around on HP as much so sorry for the delay. Did anybody try it yet? I'm curious to know what you think. And WD--soup sounds yummy. When did you get kicked off the forums?
WD Curry 111 3 months ago
When I corrected some miscreants. Don't worry, I will do fine. I did it on purpose. It was too easy.
shimmering Dawn 3 months ago
That sounds perfect... I have a couple of over ripe avocados sitting on the table... I will try this and let you know.. his sounds yummy :) Have a blessed day! Shalom!
A good idea. I knew bananas were great for thickening shakes, but had never heard of avocado being used! Might have to give it a try.
Thanks for SHARING.
JenJen0703 3 months ago
@leahlefler - if your child cannot have chocolate, have you considered going to an organic health-food store and buying carob? It is similar to chocolate, without all the negatives.
cebutouristspot 3 months ago
I will bookmark this hub. As I usually have a lot of avocado around September. I have 2 avocado tree in my backyard and they produce tons of fruit more than I can eat :D
eye say 3 months ago
this sounds excellent, thanks for sharing, and thanks for sharing the alternative recipe too - I'll use the almond milk with your combo. Bookmarking this page!
Seek-n-Find 3 months ago
@ Brett: Thank you! I know--I was hesitant when I had my first bite, but was very pleasantly surprised. :-) I bet the possibilities are endless when it comes to food combinations. Thanks for the share, too. :-)
@ JenJen: That's a great idea! I'll have to try that one myself, too.
@cebutouristspot: Yum! Maybe you can come up with an entire avocado-based menu. Guac and chips for an appetizer--avocado burgers for dinner--and avocado ice cream for dessert! I'm not sure how many people have used avocado as a theme before. :-)
@ eye say: Thanks! I think it would be good with lots of different flavored milks or milk substitutes--let me know how it turns out and if you like it!
Thanks J.S. Matthew, Victoria Lynn, Sunnie Day, Kelleyward, and AnnNone! I hope you and/or your family members enjoy this. Nothing can beat a healthy treat that tastes delicious! :-)
Great, I love it. Anything that stretches out the groceries is a must. Shared and remembered. Fabulous idea.
Seek-n-Find 3 months ago
Thank you Ddraigcoch. A recipe book along the lines of, "Simple meals to make with the random food in your house" would be a good book to write. I feel like I never have everything I need to follow recipes--but that's where creativity finds new ways to cook! :-)
BizGenGirl 3 months ago
I la-la-la-love this hub! I am such an avocado lover. Though I also have a hard time with never eating all the avocados I get before they get all oxidized and black. And IDK about anyone else, but it just doesn't taste as good eating it fresh that way. Though I hate throwing them out, cause I know they aren't "bad" when they're over rip. This idea is awesome, and I bet the kids will love it! =)
Seek-n-Find 3 months ago
@ BizGenGirl--Thaaaaaank you! :-) Yeah, they don't taste good over-ripe. I hate throwing any food out so I'm with you--I always look for ways to use up what I have. Thanks so much for stopping by to comment!
DarylnCochrane 3 months ago
This is too funny to me because I was just a little pissed that I was going to have to throw away my overly ripened avocado and then I log into hubpages and see this hub! I'm going to try it tomorrow morning for sure. Thanks :-)
Seek-n-Find 3 months ago
@DaryInCochrane: Ha! That's funny. I guess it was your destiny to find this recipe and save your avocados from a meaningless life. :-) Hope you enjoy!
TrahnTheMan 3 months ago
I like the concept but not sure I can bring myself to try it! But please keep posting any other (equally crazy) recipe ideas! Trahn-the-not-yet-converted-Man ;-)
Seek-n-Find 3 months ago
@TrahnTheMan: :-) Oh, come one--it's yummy! What kind of food WILL you try? I'll try to find a crazy recipe to match your taste. Thanks for stopping by!
